Old Town San Diego Historic Park attempts to recreate the life and setting of early San Diego from the period of 1821 to 1872. The entire complex contains five original adobes and also includes shops, restaurants and a museum. La Casa de Estudillo is a mansion built around a garden courtyard. La Casa de Machado y Stewart contains artifacts that tell the story of life during the period. Other historic buildings include a blacksmith shop, the first newspaper office of San Diego, a stable with a carriage collection and a schoolhouse. Visitors may indulge in authentic Mexican food found throughout the area.

The Cabrillo National Monument was erected in memorial of Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo who landed at San Diego Bay on September 28, 1542 thus discovering the west coast of the United States. The Monument offers a spectacular view of San Diego’s harbor and skyline with the Old Point Loma Lighthouse standing at the highest point of the park. In the visitor center, a statue and museum commemorate Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo’s exploration of California’s coast. Migrating gray whales can be seen off the coast in the winter. The Bayside Trail also offers a quiet stroll along coastal sage scrub habitat and on the west side of the park is a stretch of rocky coastline littered with reachable tide pools.
